Preschool Express Kindergarten Readiness Workbook

Welcome to the Preschool Express, an adventure for children and their families! As your child embarks on the journey from preschool to kindergarten, this workbook will make the adventure both successful and enjoyable. Begin the program by completing the Boarding Ticket. Through classes offered onboard, preschool passengers will explore the specific academic concepts that kindergarten teachers would like all children to have been introduced to before coming to class. School-age passengers will receive reinforcement on these concepts. This resource will make the journey from preschool to kindergarten a rich experience for you and your child. The Preschool Express is a record of that journey.
Created especially for parents and grandparents, preschools, homeshools, summer bridge programs, and babysitters!
Each month starts with an "A" page. These pages present the letters of the alphabet -- letter recognition, copying, and the sounds each letter makes. The last month's "A" page showcases the train's library, a place to jot down all of your child's favorite books read throughout the year.
A railroad track ties together the four workbook pages provided for each month. The left side of the track is numbered 1-31 and is for journaling special events that happen in your child's life this year (example: "Lost a tooth"). Like a photo album, each entry will become a snapshot of a moment in time. The right side of the track holds ideas of ways to reinforce the concepts introduced on each page (letters, numbers, shapes, patterning, chores, time, money, etc.).
Following each "A" page is a "B" page. Numbers 1-100, counting by fives and tens, as well as the concepts of money and time, are introduced over the course of a year. Because money and time are difficult concepts for preschoolers, they are presented as games. Resource pages at the back of the workbook provide all of the game pieces. Like the "A" pages, these pages contain helpful ideas to expand on the concepts.
Please feel free to photocopy any of these pages for further practice for your child. Or, cover the workbook pages with clear contact paper and use a washable marker to practice printing the letters. Most pages are in black and white so your child is encouraged to color the pictures with crayons. This will help sharpen his or her fine motor (small muscle) skills.
The "C" pages introduce math, self-help, and social concepts. Go deep sea fishing to explore shapes and colors... Seek out treasure following a list of directions... Build your own pizza, patterning the pieces, and win as the "Big Anchovy"... Have a pickle party... Trace your family tree, talk about safety, be the editor of your own family newspaper, learn responsibility! These pages are loaded with games and giggles!
The last page of each month is the "D" page. It contains a calendar and introduces days of the week, months, seasons, and holidays. A giant thermometer with a clothesline illustrates clothing that is appropriate for the seasons. Every other month, your child will enter a new country and learn common phrases: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian. In America, your child will learn to spell the alphabet and his name in sign language.

A Checklist of Kindergarten Skills is provided at the end of the preschool workbook. After a year of fun, collect your luggage and your Certificate of Completion. Au revoir...
